khalil_campKhalil Lake went to camp for the first time this summer. In fact, it was his first time ever away from home. With a condition like cerebral palsy and with the limited resources of his family, it would have been impossible for Khalil to have had the chance to go to camp.

But with God, all things are possible—including putting a smile like this one on the face of a nine year-old boy.

Khalil’s mom, Rhenatta, received a letter in the mail from Angel Tree last spring. Rhenatta recognized the name Angel Tree from the presents that her son had received through Angel Tree for the past four years during his father’s incarceration. “But camp?” she wondered, “Do they know Khalil has a handicap?” So she called the number of the local area coordinator for Angel Tree Camping, Phyllis Zuehlke.

Phyllis assured her that they already knew about Khalil’s disability and that they’d taken care of everything. She assured her also that the camp was completely wheel-chair accessible. It would also be possible for Khalil’s 16 year-old cousin, Kyesha, to go along for extra support and to be a comfort on his first time away. A wave of relief and excitement washed over Rhenatta. She was so excited for Khalil to be able to have an opportunity like other kids have in the summertime, to be able to go to camp.
