It’s not everyday that the phone rings and it’s the White House on the line. But that was exactly the case a few weeks ago when Prison Fellowship received a personal invitation to participate in a round-table discussion with President Bush and First Lady, Laura Bush, who is heading up the Helping America’s Youth Initiative. This initiative, aimed at helping at-risk youth, particularly seeks to address the needs of some of the most needy and overlooked children of our society, the children of prisoners.
I, along with Grove City College mentor, Jillian Antonucci, and 10-year old mentee, Brianna Morris, were among the 12 guests invited to attend this discussion at Paul Junior High Charter School on Friday, April 1st. At the round-table the President took time getting to know each of the mentors and the mentees.
“The President asked me why I’d gotten involved in mentoring,” said college junior, Jillian Antonucci, who began Angel Tree mentoring through Prison Fellowship’s Campus Ministry at Grove City College last fall. “When I told him that I’d prayed about it, he seemed very impressed. He said, ‘That’s interesting because normally college students are very inward looking.’”
